Day 30 – Tokyo
January 9th, 2006I started out my day with a visit to the largest fish market in the world… the Tokyo Central Market. Yukihiko unfortunately came down ill so he was not able to join me today… Kyoto was brutal on both of us… lots of moving around and probably too much cold. But in typical Yukihiko fashion, he emailed my an entire Tokyo itinerary organized by subway lines which was so awesome… so while I wish Yukihiko could have joined me, he certainly knows how to take care of his gaijin friends
After arriving at the fish market… I noticed that things were pretty slow… in fact so slow that I remember that today is a national holiday in Japan. Nevertheless I walked around and saw just a small inkling of how huge the market it. I was going to have the world’s freshest sushi but no fisherman + no fish market = no sushi. Maybe I might return tomorrow to see things in action and get some sushi breakfast!
I then went over to the Shinjyuku shopping area to grab a bite to eat. As I discovered in Kyoto, I love katsudon which is a bowl of fried pork on rice covered with fried eggs with a side of wheat noodle soup… not exactly your healthy fare but it is quite tasty. It reminds me of what Mom gave me whenever I was sick as a youngin’: grits mixed with fried egg…. mmmm… almost nostalgic
I then went over to buy myself a new Sony T7 camera (the really thin one) but unfortunately Sony does not include English menus on the cameras intended for sale in Japan… if it was otherwise, I could have bought the camera for about $300 when they are selling for $450 in the US… doh! I think Sony does this to prevent arbitrage (one of them fancy new business vocabulary words I learned in MBA school)… I could have bought the export version of the camera for $430 but that is not good enough of a deal to do it, so no new camera for Scotter
I then went over to the Harajyuku area of town to check out a traditional art museum there. The art was beautiful. I then dropped by Oriental Bazaar to do some shopping. I decided to wrap up my day after this as I started to get pretty tired and went back to the hostel. I should get some good rest tonight so I can enjoy my last full day of Tokyo and of my month-long trip…. kinda crazy. While I have really enjoyed this trip, I am ready to head home and get my life squared away… okay, okay… its not time for me to give my “end-of-the-trip” speech just quite yet… maybe I will save that for when I land in California… or maybe after I find an apartment… who knows?
